Ghana Premier League is our 'prized product’ — Addo

The Ghana Premier League remains the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) “prized product” and must be strengthened through improved financing, commercial partnerships and greater financial stability for clubs, according to GFA Vice-President, Mark Addo.

Speaking after the GFA’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Mr Addo said the GH¢1 million upfront payment to each Premier League club ahead of the 2026/27 season represented a major step in financing domestic football.

“For the first time, each club is receiving like one million Cedis before the league starts. That’s unheard of,” he said.

The payment is expected to assist clubs with squad building, logistics, operational expenses and other preparations ahead of the new campaign, which is scheduled to kick off on September 5.

Mr Addo said the intervention formed part of a broader strategy to strengthen the Premier League while creating opportunities to increase its commercial value through broadcasting, sponsorship and other revenue streams.

“The marketing department and the FA continue to work all the time, and as more sponsors come in, we will definitely make sure,” he said.

He stressed that securing the right commercial partners was essential to maximising the league’s potential, describing the competition as the association’s most important domestic football property.

“GPL is our best product, so we have to also make sure that we have the right fit in terms of the right sponsor,” Mr Addo said.

The GH¢1 million base payment forms part of a GH¢9.5 million prize and incentive package for the 2026/27 campaign.

The eventual champions will receive GH¢3 million and a JAC vehicle, while the second, third and fourth-placed clubs will earn GH¢1 million, GH¢800,000 and GH¢750,000 respectively.

Mr Addo’s comments underline the GFA’s intention to combine direct financial support with stronger commercial development to enhance the sustainability and value of the Premier League.
