After successful balloting and draw last Friday at the Accra Polo Club, four clubs bearing the names of their sponsors emerged as competitors in the three-day criss-cross system of play expected to climax on Saturday.

They are Rivonia, Delaney Petroleum, WDP Construction and LOGI-PLUS. Rivonia take on LOGI-PLUS in the first encounter at 3p.m., while WDP face-off with Delaney Petroleum at 4p.m.

The winner of the first match square off with the loser of the second match and vice-versa in the second match. The best two teams by way of goals and points will determine the two clubs for the final on Saturday.

The sport has witnessed an upsurge in both local and international competitions this year under the leadership of Mr Kwakye Dopoah-Dei, president of the Accra Polo Club and president of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA).

He told the Daily Graphic that his passion for the sport and the desire to make the game a national past-time drove him to do what he could to make it glitter among the lot.

He entreated polo enthusiasts to purchase horses, which, he argued, were not very expensive, but was worth the investment.

Mr Dopoah-Dei noted that the final competition, dubbed ‘Accra Open’, was sponsored by Vodafone and underpinned the growth of the sport and the involvement of corporate society in witnessing the development of the sport in Ghana.
