Police for hockey KO double Saturday

Local hockey champions, Trustees of SSNIT, after a rather disappointing fifth-place at the recently-held Africa Hockey Club Championship in Uganda, have been presented with an opportunity to redeem their image against Police on Saturday in the men’s final of the Beige Capital Knockout clash at the National Hockey Stadium in Accra.

Despite their apparent phobia for laurels at the international stage, Trustees, who could best be described as ‘local champions’ are expected to get their rhythm right on their favourite home turf against a rather difficult side, Ghana Police Service, who were by far the best team last season.

Indeed, but for ill- luck the Police teams (male and female) should have won the league with ease but surrendered  to Trustees and Ghana Revenue Authority (CEPS), respectively.

And Saturday may just be the right time for Police to pick the ultimate silverware to show to their employers and to etch their names on the country’s hockey history. Indeed, the story should not be any different from their ladies who have a date with GRA (CEPS), bronze medalists at the Africa championship.

From skipper Nafisa Umaru through to Martha Safoah, the Police have the best of arsenals to surmount any challenge and only the gods can stop them on Saturday.

But before the two crunch finals, NDK Financiers and SAPHOLDA are expected to rekindle their recent rivalry in the seniors’ final while Legonites and Real Ambassadors engage each other in the junior final.

The hockey knockout competition has been off the calendar for the past four years due to lack of sponsorship until Beige Capital came through for them last year.
