A national super-middleweight championship showdown between military officer Daniel Amomba and Simon Kafari will headline a packed 10-bout boxing card when the inaugural Northern Rumble takes centre stage at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale on December 5.
The championship clash is the centrepiece of an ambitious promotion by SP Sport Management and Promotions, which is seeking to establish northern Ghana as a destination for professional boxing and create more competitive opportunities for fighters outside Accra.
Dubbed Northern Rumble – Farmers' Day Edition, the event will take place a day after the national Farmers' Day celebration, combining top-level boxing with a broader campaign to develop the sport across the country.
The full fight card was unveiled at the event's official launch in Tamale on October 17, attracting sports administrators, security officials, boxing stakeholders and prominent personalities who endorsed the initiative.
Championship showdown
The Amomba vs Kafari contest is expected to provide the night's biggest attraction, with the national super-middleweight title at stake.
Former national champion Robert 'Stopper' Quaye is also billed to feature, although organisers have yet to confirm his opponent.
Another potentially intriguing contest pits Kudzanai Disney against Kofi Manu in the welterweight division.
The supporting card features several match-ups designed to give emerging fighters a platform to showcase their abilities.
Roland Agosim will square off against Robert Akolbila Akolgo, while Alhassan Wahab takes on Emmanuel Odoi.
Faisal Mohammed Abdul Karim has been matched against Mohammed Tagoe, with Mohammed Iddrisu Muntari facing Isaac Quartey.
The remaining contests will see Abdul Gafaru Alhassan battle Mustapha Appiah, Abdul Rahman Hamza meet Dombil Sunkpalega, and Adeyemo Lukuman Yusuph exchange punches with Abdullah Bawa Zakaria.
Together, the bouts form an extensive programme that organisers hope will attract boxing enthusiasts from Tamale and surrounding communities while exposing northern fighters to a bigger competitive platform.
Expanding boxing market
For SP Sport Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Samuel Agyei Darkwah, the Northern Rumble is part of a wider strategy to break professional boxing's longstanding concentration in Accra.
The promotional outfit wants to take major fight nights to regional capitals, develop local boxing talent and create opportunities for fighters who have limited access to regular professional contests.
"We want to promote boxers in the Northern Region and have more promotions around the country — spread boxing everywhere," Mr Darkwah declared.
The promoter has already engaged traditional authorities and key institutions in Tamale, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana Prisons Service, to secure community participation and organisational support ahead of the December showdown.
