No decision yet on Black Stars coaching candidates — Pappoe

The five-member committee tasked by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation with finding a new coach for the Black Stars is set to commence work this week, amid despite growing speculation about possible candidates for the vacant position.

The committee was constituted last Saturday following the departure of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz.

However, the Chairman of the committee, Fred Pappoe, has urged restraint, saying the members are yet to meet and begin the assignment.

Mr Pappoe said the committee had not yet established the criteria it would use to assess potential candidates and was, therefore, unable to provide details about the profile of coach it would be seeking.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports in a telephone interview, he also declined to confirm or deny reports that Yorke had applied for the position.

“We have not started work yet, so I cannot put out any information,” he said.

He explained that the committee would be in a better position to speak about the process after its members had convened and agreed on the way forward.

The committee includes former Black Stars players Anthony Baffoe and Stephen Appiah, alongside Agbesi Dzakpasu and high–performance coach, Faisal Chibsah.

They are expected to assess potential candidates and submit their recommendation to the GFA for consideration and a final decision.

The latest search brings back memories of the GFA's 2021 exercise following the dismissal of Charles Kwablan Akonnor.

At the time, the association appointed a three-member committee comprising Dr Randy Abbey, Mark Addo and Alhaji Salifu Zida to search for a replacement.

The committee recommended the return of Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac, who had previously led Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

However, Rajevac's second spell ended after only four months following Ghana's poor showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage after losing 1-0 to Morocco, drawing 1-1 with Gabon and suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to Comoros.
