A new trophy will be at stake when Kumasi Asante kotoko and AshantiGold clash in this year’s SIC Nyemitei SWAG Cup match at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, November 29.
SIC Insurance Company Limited, headline sponsors of the annual cup match, has procured a brand new 21-inch trophy to replace the existing one which had been used for over a decade and was won by Heart of Lions in 2009 when the SIC Nyemitei SWAG Cup was last played.
Nana Yaw Mantey, Corporate Affairs Manager of SIC Insurance, said the purchase of a new trophy was part of his outfit’s plan to revive the match, one of the country’s oldest competitions in the country first organised by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) in 1972.
It is played annually in honour of the late H.P Nyemitei, a former Chief Patron of SWAG and an astute sports administrator who in his heyday served as a chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Accra Hearts of Oak.
He was onetime Deputy Managing Director of SIC Insurance.
According to Nana Mantey, the new trophy will be unveiled during the launch of the match in Kumasi tomorrow during which the participating clubs will be present.
He added that the sponsors were looking forward to a keen competition between Ashgold and Kotoko, as both teams have demonstrated quality in the just-ended Premier League season.
SWAG President Mr Kwabena Yeboah, expressed his appreciation to the insurance giants for the new trophy and said the gesture was an expression of the company’s determination to give the revived SIC Nyemitei SWAG Cup a trophy that befits its image.
“The trophy will definitely revive passion for the match. The winner of the match will go into the record as the first club to have touched the brand new trophy," the SWAG president stated.
