Ghanaian table tennis player Courage Nanevie produced an impressive display at the Westchester Monthly Medal competition to emerge as one of the outstanding performers at the 2026 USATT New York State Championships last weekend.
Nanevie, competing among USATT Gold and Silver membership holders, including citizens and non-citizens, won the Over-50 category and added a silver medal in the Under-40 event to complete a memorable outing.
The Ghanaian began his campaign strongly, defeating Brian Moran 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 before overcoming Stephen Finn 11-9, 11-5, 11-7.
He subsequently defeated Winston Wang 3-2 in the Over-50 final to claim the championship trophy.
With his confidence boosted by the victory, Nanevie was hoping to complete a double in the Over-40 category. However, Wang produced a strong response in the final to avenge his earlier defeat, beating the Ghanaian 3-2 to settle for the gold.
Despite missing out on a second title, Nanevie's two-trophy haul made him one of the competition's best performers.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic after the event, Nanevie expressed satisfaction with his performance but admitted he had hoped to win both finals.
“It was a difficult final, and although I am happy with my performance, I would have loved to win gold in both categories,” he said.
He said he would use the experience as motivation to return stronger at the next championship and hoped to avenge his defeat whenever he meets Wang again.
