Nana Konadu laments state of amateur boxing

Two-time world boxing champion Marvellous Nana Konadu has bemoaned the state of Ghana’s amateur boxing system, calling it nothing but a scrap.

Speaking to Graphic Sports in Accra last Friday, Nana Yaw  lamented the ineffectiveness of the amateur system, saying it had contributed to Ghana’s dwindling boxing fortunes.

“In our days, we were carefully and meticulously ushered through the amateur system, so we were well groomed and better appreciated and understood the rudiments of the game up to the professional level but it is no more the case now”, he stated.

The former flyweight and bantamweight world champion noted with dismay the rush with which young boxers wanted to turn professional to acquire early wealth only to be left disappointed when their careers ended abysmally.

He called for the revival of amateur boxing and a sustained effort at making it more attractive to the youth who want to venture into the discipline.

The 52-year-old former hard-hitter was optimistic that with the right resources, better management and a well thought-out plan, Ghana’s boxing would be best again.

“We were once  the talk of the world in terms of boxing but I can’t tell what exactly happened we were no more, we must rise again and take our rightful place in the sport”, Nana Yaw Konadu surmised.
