$8 million for 2018 Africa Women’s Nations Cup - Queens get $32,000 for WAFU win

The government has voted $8million for the organisation of the 2018 Africa Women’s Nations Cup (AWCON) which Ghana will be hosting in November.

According to the Minister of Youth and Sports,Isaac Kwame Asiamah, the amount will be for the renovation works currently ongoing at the Accra Sports Stadium, one of the two venues slated for the eight-nation competition, as well as the organisation of the entire three-week competition.

Taking his turn at the Meet the Press series in Accra yesterday, the Minister said the government was committed to ensuring a successful hosting of the competition and emphasised that the ’government was committed to ensuring a successful organisation of the competition.’

He allayed fears that there was nothing indicative of Ghana hosting the AWCON, insisting the organisation was going on and at the right time, it will pick up.
“We are on course with the organisation. I know the Local Organising Committee is working behind the scenes, and the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo Addo, has agreed to be the Chief Supporter for the competition. Ghana will be ready for a good competition,” the minister revealed.

He also announced that the nation’s senior female football team, the Black Queens, who will be representing Ghana at the AWCON, are to receive $32,000 as their reward for winning the WAFU Zone B competition in Abidjan last month, indicating that the reward was to motivate them for the bigger assignment in November.
