Kotoko set for big coronation on Sunday

The Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi will be turned into a festive ground on Sunday as the red army of Kumasi Asante Kotoko supporters congregate for their 26th Premier League title coronation.

The glorious occasion coincides with Kotoko’s penultimate league match against relegation-bound Elmina Sharks.

Despite confirming their status as champions of the 2021/22 league last Thursday after forcing a 1-1 away draw against Ashantigold in Obuasi, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) thought it wise to give the Porcupine Warriors a befitting crowning with their gold medals and the GH¢250,000 prize money in front of their home fans.

Having stormed Accra last Sunday to call the bluff of Great Olympics with a lone goal victory, Kotoko will be in the right mood to use Sharks as the icing on the grand celebration cake.

Relegation battles

The Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale will witness a fierce encounter on Sunday when relegation-threatened Real Tamale United and Alhaji Karim Gruzah’s King Faisal Babies clash in a battle for survival.

At Sogakope also on Sunday, another survival battle will be fiercely fought when West Africa Football Academy (WAFA), who defied all odds to shock Bibiani Goldstars 4-3 at the Dun’s Park last Sunday, will strive to sacrifice fellow strugglers, Techiman Eleven Wonders.

In Accra, Great Olympics will engage city rivals Hearts of Oak in an exciting derby, while the Nana Agyemang Badu I Park at Dormaa-Ahenkro will host Aduana FC and Goldstars.

At the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium, Ashantigold will welcome Bechem United, with Berekum Chelsea playing host to Dreams FC in a close contest at the Golden City Park.

Legon Cities will also play host to Karela United at the El-Wak Stadium on Sunday, while Medeama welcome Accra Lions to the Akoon Park in Tarkwa the same day.

Meanwhile, the GFA has directed all match officials to ensure that all matches kick off simultaneously at 3pm on Sunday, except the Kotoko versus Elmina Sharks coronation match.
