Asante Kotoko face a defining test in their faltering Premier League campaign tomorrow when high-flying leaders Medeama SC storm the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, threatening to deepen the Porcupine Warriors' troubles, tightening their grip on the title race.
For caretaker coach Hamza Obeng, the stakes could hardly be higher. With Kotoko languishing in ninth position after three defeats in eight matches, victory over the league's most prolific attacking side would not only revive their fading championship ambitions, transform the mood around the club and strengthen his claim to the job.
The Porcupine Warriors are still smarting from last season’s 4-0 humiliation by the Tarkwa club. Now, with Kotoko, ninth after three defeats in eight matches, another setback would deepen questions about their ability to compete with Ghana’s leading sides, just as a Super Clash with Hearts of Oak approaches.
Medeama, however, arrive with the league’s sharpest attack, having tallied 14 goals in eight matches, scoring in every fixture and conceding seven.
Kotoko have scored nine and shipped nine, figures that expose the imbalance Coach Obeng must correct if his side are to spring an upset.
History offers some of the Kotoko faithful some reassurance.
The Porcupine Warriors have won 16 of their 36 meetings with Medeama across all competitions, compared with nine victories for the visitors and 11 draws. But memories of that four-goal thrashing are a warning against relying on reputation.
Both teams took something from last weekend. Medeama edged Aduana FC 1-0 to preserve their position at the summit, while Kotoko recovered to draw 1-1 with AshantiGold 04 in their regional derby.
The visitors’ spearhead, Kingsley Braye, shares the league’s scoring lead with Aduana’s Stephen Amankona on four goals. Kotoko cannot afford to give Braye room in the penalty area, but concentrating exclusively on him would invite trouble from Etse Dogli, Emmanuel Anokye, Ebenezer Adade, Emmanuel Boateng and Jelilu Osman.
Kotoko’s best route to victory may lie in breaking Medeama’s rhythm in midfield, protecting the spaces behind their full-backs and turning possession into clearer chances. Their attacking options include Hubert Gyau, Patrick Asiedu, Lord Amoah, Lord Hilary Adabo, Emmanuel Antwi, Joseph Amoah, Eric Gbetta, Emmanuel Mamah and Solomon Nsoh Asaah.
Hearts eye fourth straight win
Hearts, meanwhile, travel to Debibi United with a chance to increase the pressure on the leaders.
Three successive wins have put the Phobians firmly in contention, underpinned by the league’s best defensive record: just two goals conceded in eight matches.
A fourth straight victory at Debibi Presby Park could take Hearts above Medeama, depending on the result in Kumasi.
Yet, the hosts will relish the opportunity to puncture the confidence of more celebrated visitors. Hearts must match their defensive rigour with enough attacking urgency to avoid an uncomfortable afternoon.
Third-placed FC Samartex also remain firmly in the title picture. They host 12th-placed former champions Bibiani Gold Stars at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena in Samreboi, aware that dropped points could prove expensive in an increasingly congested race.
Sixth-placed Bechem United take their recent improvement to Kpando Sports Stadium against Heart of Lions, while Aduana welcome regional rivals Berekum Chelsea to the Nana Agyemang Badu Park, looking to rebound from the defeat at Medeama.
At Wenchi Stadium, Young Apostles entertain Karela United. Bottom club Dreams FC visit Basake Holy Stars at the AAK Sports Arena in Basake, desperate to halt a campaign that has left them rooted to the foot of the standings.
AshantiGold face post-Zito test
Swedru All Blacks host AshantiGold 04 in another fixture charged with intrigue after the Miners parted company with Abdul Karim Zito this week.
His eight-match spell produced three wins, three defeats and two draws. The immediate test for AshantiGold is whether they can respond to that upheaval on the pitch.
This afternoon’s opening fixture sees Vision FC welcome Port City to the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex in Tema New Town.
Vision snapped a six-game winless run — three draws and three defeats — with last weekend’s 3-1 victory away to Dreams FC.
They sit 13th with nine points and an identical tally of 11 goals scored and conceded. Successive victories for the first time this season would provide a welcome lift, but Port City will seek to stall that recovery.
