Hyundai, Sports Ministry plan grassroots sports partnership

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is set to partner with South Korean automotive giant, Hyundai Motor Group, to construct sporting facilities and support grassroots sports development in Ghana.

The proposed partnership was discussed during a meeting between the sector minister, Kofi Adams, and a Hyundai delegation led by Kim Ilbum, Executive Vice President in charge of Global Policy Office and Strategic Planning, at the minister’s office last Monday.

The meeting, facilitated by Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea, Kojo Choi, explored several areas of cooperation, including the construction of mini pitches in partnership with FIFA, the distribution of footballs and boots to schools, and the possible introduction of archery in Ghana.

Mr Adams welcomed the proposed collaboration, describing it as timely, particularly as Ghana and South Korea prepare to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations next year, alongside Ghana’s 70th anniversary of independence.

He stressed the importance of investing in grassroots sports, arguing that sustainable development depended on building a strong foundation at the school and community levels.

“If the foundation is weak, the superstructure will collapse,” he said, noting that President John Dramani Mahama had directed the ministry to prioritise school sports and grassroots development since assuming office.

For his part, Mr Kim reaffirmed Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to strengthening its friendship with Ghana through long-term collaboration in sports, recreation and cultural activities.

Kim also revealed that Hyundai-owned Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors football club could visit Ghana for exhibition matches, providing opportunities to deepen cooperation with the ministry and engage young Ghanaians.
