Hockey: Trustees win Homowo Cup

Trustees of SSNIT last Saturday clinched the NDK Ga Dangbe Homowo Hockey title with a 4-2 penalty victory over their rivals Police.

Trustees raced into a 2-0 lead, courtesy Salya Insalbini and Francis Tetteh, but were pegged back by the end of a thrilling first half when Police replied through Godsway Balagi and Benedict Sam.

Trustees sensational striker, Johnny Botsio appeared to have netted the match winner in the 37th minute when he drilled in a sublime solo effort.

However, Police equalised a minute later when Felix Tettey stunned Trustees goalie Haruna Iliasu with a trickish shot.

While Police missed twice in the eight- second penalty shuffle, Trustees held their nerves as Johnny Botsio, Francis Tetteh, Anum Abdul Rahman and David Ghablah all scored, while Salya Insalbini saw his strike saved.

The victory handed Trustees their sixth trophy of what has been a silverware- laden season with wins in the League, Gala, T. Tommy and Super Cup titles.

The women's trophy was lifted by Reformers of the Ghana Prisons Service, who topped the four-team log with five points after three games. They drew 0-0 with both Ghana Revenue Authority and Extinguishers while they stunned favourites, Police 1-0.

Sapholda Hockey Club, who were re-named Ga Mashie for the one-day tourney claimed the seniors’ title, with nine points after beating Tema (1-0), Teshie Nungua (2-0) and Osu/La (1-0).

The youth title involving two U-21 teams from the Greater Accra region, was won by Team B who shared a GH¢1,000 cash prize with fellow finalists, Team A.

The teams were handed their trophies by the Paramount Chief of Osu, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, who praised the players and executives of the Greater Accra Hockey, as well as the event sponsors NDK Financial Services for celebrating the Homowo with an exciting sports tournament.
