A letter from the Presidency directing the suspension of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah as Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) over the 2026 FIFA World Cup visa scandal has surfaced on social media.
The letter, signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, and dated October 1, 2026, stated that Ampofo Ankrah was to be suspended following allegations of visa racketeering and financial irregularities involving NSA officials.
It clarified, however, that the suspension was an administrative measure to allow investigations to proceed and did not constitute a finding of wrongdoing against him.
“I refer to your report on allegations of visa racketeering and financial irregularities involving National Sports Authority (NSA) officials in connection with the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“His Excellency the President has directed that Yaw Ampofo Ankrah be suspended from his duties as Director-General of the NSA with immediate effect, pending the completion of the investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). The suspension is an administrative measure and does not constitute a finding of wrongdoing,” portions of the letter read.
The letter further directed that Prof. Emmanuel Sarpong, the National Coordinator for School and Grassroots Sports, should assume the role of acting Director-General of the NSA while investigations continue.
It also instructed the relevant authorities to communicate the decision to the persons concerned, coordinate the Ministry’s actions with the ongoing CID investigation and preserve all related records.
The letter stressed the need for cooperation with the investigative process as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
Investigations into the alleged visa racketeering and financial irregularities remain ongoing. No conclusion of wrongdoing against Ampofo Ankrah has been established in the letter.
