Hearts fans to boycott President’s Cup match?

Agitated supporters of Accra Hearts of Oak have threatened to boycott Sunday’s President’s Cup match against arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Stadium.

At a tensed meeting hosted by the CEO of Hearts, Mr Frederick Moore, and the regional executives of the National Chapters Committee (NCC) at the club’s secretariat in Accra last Monday, the supporters argued that the timing of the match was not favourable as it would affect the Phobians’ ambition to break the league title drought this season.

However, the meeting was reported to be inconclusive as the club’s CEO disagreed with the supporters, leading to some heated exchanges. Subsequently, the NCC leadership resolved to boycott Sunday’s game, promising to officially petition the Board of Directors of the club on the matter.

This year’s edition of the President’s Cup match, which is to honour the sitting President of the land, was rained off three months ago at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Since then, both teams have sharpened their arsenal in anticipation for this all-important match.

The game will be a test case for both Kotoko and Hearts prior to the start of the Premier League in 13 days time.

Ahead of the clash, both sides have stepped up their preparations not only for the President’s Cup but also for the new league season. While Hearts travelled to Togo to defeat Etoile Filante 1-0  in an international friendly in Lome last Friday, Kotoko were in Cape Coast the same day to beat Premier League side, Ebusua Dwarfs 2-0 in another friendly at the Robert Mensah Stadium.
