Hearts desperate to end slump against fearless Port City

Hearts of Oak’s bright start to the Ghana Premier League season is fast losing its shine, and tomorrow’s showdown with fearless newcomers, Port City FC, at the University of Ghana Stadium could prove a defining test of their title ambitions.

Three matches without a win, three consecutive blanks in front of goal and growing frustration among the Phobian faithful have piled the pressure on Coach Nebojsa Kapor, whose side have struggled to reproduce the attacking spark that delivered two straight victories at the start of the campaign.

The Bosnian tactician must now find answers against opponents who have taken to the elite division with remarkable confidence.

Far from looking like top-flight novices, Port City have stormed into third place on the league log with 10 points, just one behind joint leaders Medeama SC and FC Samartex 1996, turning tomorrow’s encounter into arguably the weekend’s most intriguing contest.

Christopher Ennin’s men have already demonstrated their ability to upset established opponents, stunning Bibiani Gold Stars 2-0 away before narrowly losing 1-0 to the defending champions, Medeama.

Their emphatic 3-0 demolition of Bechem United last weekend further underlined their growing confidence.

And Ennin, a former Berekum Chelsea coach familiar with the Phobians, has warned that his side will not be intimidated by Hearts’ reputation.

"We have played against them once and studied them. There will be no respect on the field of play, and the better team will win," he declared.

For Hearts, the biggest headache remains their blunt attack. Since John Antwi struck twice in the opening 4-0 rout of Berekum Chelsea, the goals have dried up alarmingly.

Goalless draws against Bechem United and Dreams FC, sandwiched around a 1-0 defeat to Karela United, have left the Phobians searching for their first goal in three matches.

Kapor will need experienced forward Antwi to rediscover his scoring instincts, while Mawuli Wayo, Martin Karikari and Raphael Amponsah must provide greater attacking thrust.

The midfield confrontation between Hearts’ Dominic Nsobila and Port City’s experienced Gideon Waja could be decisive, with Kelvin Osei Assibey, Alex Banso, Daniel Nsobila and Caleb Koranteng also expected to play important roles.

At the other end, skipper Benjamin Asare, fresh from international duty and a clean sheet on his return, faces a dangerous Port City’s attack spearheaded by Francis Gyetuah, Owusu Ansah and Hamza Zakari, who have struck twice each this season.

Hearts can draw encouragement from their unbeaten record against promoted opponents at home since last season, but another stalemate will hardly satisfy their supporters who are demanding a convincing response.

And for their Bosnian coach, three points will be more than a necessity. The points are vital to restoring belief among the playing body and the club’s faithful.

Medeama aim to maintain top spot

At the T&A Stadium in Tarkwa, joint leaders Medeama SC will seek to maintain their impressive start when they welcome Kpando Heart of Lions tomorrow.

With 11 points, Medeama know victory could strengthen their position at the summit, but Lions arrive determined to settle an old score.

The Tarkwa side thrashed them 5-2 at the same venue last season, having earlier secured a 1-0 victory in Kpando.

Those painful defeats provide added motivation for Lions, who will be desperate to avoid another bruising afternoon and improve their standing.

Interestingly, Lions hold a slender advantage in the overall head-to-head record, with eight victories to Medeama’s seven, while eight encounters have ended level.

That history suggests a competitive contest, although Medeama will be determined to make home advantage count.

Kotoko face Swedru fortress

Kumasi Asante Kotoko face another stern examination this afternoon when they travel to the Swedru Stadium to confront an All Blacks side who have turned their home ground into a fortress.

The hosts are unbeaten in their last eight home league matches, recording six victories and two draws — a formidable record that should test the Porcupine Warriors’ resolve.

There is also an intriguing historical twist: meetings between Swedru All Blacks and Kotoko since the 2006–07 season have produced no draws.

With All Blacks fiercely protective of their home record and Kotoko determined to make their pedigree count, another fiercely contested encounter beckons.

In other encounters tomorrow, Berekum Chelsea host Debibi United at the Golden City Park, while struggling Young Apostles face an uphill battle against high-flying Aduana FC at the Wenchi Stadium.

Former champions Bibiani Gold Stars welcome Basake Holy Stars to Dun’s Park, with Bechem United hoping to make home advantage count against Vision FC at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.

The Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi will host a potentially explosive clash between FC AshantiGold and FC Samartex, while basement side Dreams FC, still searching for their first victory of the season, face a daunting trip to Tamale to confront Karela United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.
