Guinea, Mali exit WAFU Cup

Guinea and Mali both exited the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations after playing to a 1-1 draw in their final group stage match at Nduom Sports Stadium in Elmina yesterday..

With Nigeria beating Ghana 2-0 in a concurrent Group A match in Cape Coast to reach the semis, the result between the Syli Nationale and the Eagles of Mali was nothing more than academic.

Guinea started the stronger of the two teams and went ahead in the seventh minute through Abdoulaye Naby Camara who shot from close range after some poor defending by the Malians.

After many missed chances, Mali finally scored the equalising goal in the 78th minute after Guinea defender Abdoulaye Naby Camara miskicked the ball into his own net .

The draw left Mali in third position in Group A with two points but on superior goal difference over bottom-placed Guinea who had two points from three games.
