Grace Asantewaa signs for Real Betis

Ghanaian international, Grace Asantewaa has joined Real Betis Féminas in the Spanish women's league after agreeing personal terms with the club.

The midfielder who has penned a two-year deal is the first signing of Betis, nicknamed Verdiblanco, for the 2021/22 season.

Betis announced her arrival on Twitter, saying: “OFFICIAL | Grace Asantewaa, primer refuerzo del #BetisFéminas para la temporada 2021/22 ¡Bienvenida, @AsantewaMessiah” shich translates to: "OFFICIAL: Grace Asantewaa, the first player to join Betis Feminas for the 2021/22 season. Welcome!"

The 20-year-old national player moves from EDF Logroño, another Primera Iberdrola side where she has been since 2019, having joined in from Techiman-based side, Ampem Darkoa Ladies.

In the just-ended season, she scored four goals in 24 league appearances for Logrono who finished 17th in the Spanish female league.

The skilful midfielder is not only excited about the new move, but also eager to bring her experience, talent and skill to bear on the performance of her new club.

“It’s another exciting step towards greater things. I’m looking forward to a great season with Betis,” she said in reaction.

Betis finished 12th in the league and hope the signing of Asantewaa will strengthen their squad for the 2021-2022 campaign.

Asantewaa played for four seasons with Ampem Darkoa and scored the only goal that helped her side claim their first Women’s Premier League title in the play-off against Hasaacas Ladies in 2016.

She was also instrumental in her side’s dominance in the northern zone of the WPL and helped her side to their second title in 2018.

In 2019, she played a key role in Ampem Darkoa’s campaign in the special competition, scoring five goals in 11 appearances, and helped them to a second place finish in the final against Hasaacas Ladies.

She, however, won three Most Valuable Player awards during the competition which helped her scoop the Best Player of the tournament.

A graduate of Techiman Senior High School, the skilful midfielder featured for Ghana’s Under-17 side, the Black Maidens in the 2016 Women’s World Cup (WWC) staged in Jordan, where they reached the quarter-finals, as well as in the 2018 FIFA Under-20 WWC played in France.

She was promoted to the senior team, the Black Queens and was part of the team that won the maiden West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B tournament in Abidjan in 2018.

She also played for the Queens during the 2018 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) which Ghana hosted, but exited at the group stage.
