Golf: Yego wins 2020 Matchplay Champion of Champions

Kenya’s Geoffrey Yego beat Ghana’s Eric Ofosuhene 3-2 to win the 2020 Matchplay Champion of Champions Finale at the Bok-Nam Kim Golf Course last Sunday in Accra.

Yego won on holes one, five, eight and nine on a windy and drizzly course to carry a two-point lead to the 10th hole in front of a watching group which included the Kenyan High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Eliphas M. Barine.

Ofosuhene’s resistance

Ofosuhene, winner of the Celebrity Golf Club's President Putter title a day earlier, reduced the deficit by winning the 10th hole but his resistance soon faded after some errant drives landed him in a gully and bunkers on the 11th, 13th and 14th holes.

Yego's lead became unassailable with two holes remaining after he and Ofosuhene played identical bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes.

Yego praises caddy

In an interview after his winning shot, Yego expressed gratitude to his caddy for helping him to understand the course and also guiding him to victory.

The amateur golfer, who plays with a handicap of 11.5, added that playing the back nine at the Bok-Nam Kim course was more difficult than the front nine.

For his part, Ofosuhene said he tried his best but Yego was the better player on the day.

Both golfers were later presented with crystal trophies.
