Golf: Brave-Mensah shines at tiGO Open

Veteran professional golfer, Victor Brave-Mensah, called the bluff of two emerging forces on the local front, Emos Korblah and Vincent Torgah, to grab the topmost prize in that division in annual tiGO Tema Open while none failed to win the much-publicised GHc 10,000 hole-in-one prize.

The huge-framed Brave-Mensah, one of the tutors at the Tema Country Golf Club, was emphatic in his victory as he was four strokes better than the famous Korblah, who defeated rival Torgah with two strokes on 281 points over four days of play.

Indeed, all the top four professionals made it to the top, including John Mawuli, who, even though was fourth, scored impressive 288.

Apart from familiar names which captured the headlines in the professional category, the winners in the amateur divisions were mainly of  unknown faces except evergreen Mona Myles-Lamptey and ‘the apostle of Ghana golf,’ Peter K. Amenyo, who won the ladies and the men’s scratch events respectively with ease.

Amenyo had been off colour for long time until recently when he rediscovered his former self with some blistering performance. And the win on Saturday was a good reward for his hard work.

Amenyo was followed by Osei Bonsu Maxwell and Asorgba S, while F. O. Gyeabour and Mercy Wenner were second and third respectively after Mona.

It was not a good day for some of the top guns, including ‘retired nurse,’ Florence Etwi-Barimah, who could only manage a third place in the ladies Group B.

The sponsors, Millicom Ghana Limited, have promised an exciting and enhanced package next year.
