Golden Shuttlers storm World Juniors after continental success

Ghana’s Golden Shuttlers head into the 2026 BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo with continental momentum after claiming four medals at the All-Africa U-19 Championships, including silver in the women’s doubles and three bronze medals.

The haul underlined the growing competitiveness of Ghana’s junior badminton programme and gives the seven-member team, a timely confidence boost as they step up from African competition to face some of the world’s strongest emerging players.

Ghana’s best result came in the women’s doubles, where Moslena Ama Korama Adu and Rachael Quarcoo pushed the top seeds to the limit before narrowly losing a three-game final 15-9, 9-15, 13-15 to settle for silver.

The Golden Shuttlers also won bronze in the Mixed Team Relay after an agonising semi-final defeat to Algeria.

Algeria took the opening game 55-46 before Ghana responded strongly to win the second 55-48 and forced a decider. The contest then went down to the final point, with Algeria squeezing through 55-54 to deny Ghana a place in the final.

Ghana had earlier powered into the semi-finals with a 2-0 quarter-final victory over hosts Egypt, having also beaten Mauritius and benefited from a walkover against Senegal during the preliminary stage.

There was further success in the mixed doubles, where Ghana secured two more bronze medals after Adu-Mintah and Moslena Adu, as well as Francis Obeng-Shang and Quarcoo, reached the semi-finals.

The four-medal return provides another marker of progress for a junior programme that has increasingly made its presence felt on the continental stage.

Ghana’s young players have built valuable competitive experience through major youth events, including the African Schools Games in Algeria and the African Youth Games in Angola last year, and the latest results in Cairo suggest that development is beginning to translate into stronger performances.

The 2026 BWF World Junior Championships begin today (October 5) at the Cairo International Stadium, with the team’s competition running until October 10 before the individual championships take centre stage from October 11 to 17.

Ghana have been drawn in Group C1 alongside Chinese Taipei and New Zealand, presenting an immediate test of how far the Golden Shuttlers can carry their continental form against elite international opposition.

The seven-member Ghanaian squad comprises Adu-Mintah, Samuel Amasah, Francis Obeng-Shang, Moslena Adu, Rachael Quarcoo, Margaret Sarpei and Alana Faith Sullo.
