Ghana’s national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, will begin a national camping programme on August 14 in Accra as preparations intensify for the 2026 World Armwrestling Championships in New Delhi, India.
Nine selected pullers will assemble for the opening phase of the intensive training programme, which is aimed at preparing the team for the global championship scheduled for October 26 to November 7.
The camping programme will later move to the Eastern Region, where the athletes will continue their preparations under the supervision of the technical team led by coaches Husseini Akueteh Addy and Nii Otu Larkyne.
The camp will focus on strength and physical conditioning, technical and tactical development, recovery, discipline and mental preparation. The coaches will also use the sessions to assess the athletes and fine-tune preparations for the various weight categories.
The nine-member team includes world champion Grace Minta, world championships medallists Mabel Yeboah and Blessed Abeka Nunoo, as well as African champion Daniel Acquah, alongside other promising pullers.
Ghana will enter the World Championships with confidence following a dominant performance to sweep medals during the 15th Africa Armwrestling Championships on home soil in Accra last May, where the Golden Arms demonstrated their growing strength and depth by claiming a commanding 168 medals to top the podium by a distance.
Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) President Charles Osei Asibey said the camping programme would be crucial to Ghana’s ambitions in New Delhi.
“The camping is very important because the World Championship requires a different level of preparation. We need to bring the athletes together, assess their readiness and give the coaches enough time to work on the technical and physical aspects of their performance.”
Osei Asibey added that the objective was not simply to participate but to compete for medals against the world’s best.
“Our target in India is to compete strongly and challenge for medals. The camping in Accra and later in the Eastern Region will give us the platform to build the team we need to achieve that target.”
The New Delhi championships, organised by the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF), is expected to attract about 1,500 competitors from around the world.
GAF is also appealing to corporate organisations and state institutions for support as the Golden Arms step up preparations for the global assignment.
