GOC picks Chef d’Mission for competitions

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has named Mohammed Sahnoon, president of the Ghana Cycling Federation, as Chef d’Mission for Ghana’s team at next year’s Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast City, Australia. He would be assisted by Cillian Walsh, president of the Ghana Shooting Federation.

The appointment of Messrs Sahnoon and Walsh were part of a new policy by the GOC to name head of contingents to various teams well ahead of schedule to ensure early preparations for their respective competitions.

GOC president, Ben Nunoo Mensah, disclosed to the Graphic Sports that Chefs d’Missions had been named for teams competing in major international assignments from now to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

“The Chef d’Missions, with support from their assistants and working teams, are to immediately start focusing on their activities to facilitate the preparations of their respective teams so as to ensure the successful participation of the teams at the various games,” he explained.

The list of team leaders, most of whom are heads of various national federations, comprise Jerry Ahmed Shaib, a board member of Special Olympics, Ghana, as Chef d’Mission to the XXIII Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang next February while Albert Frimpong, presidents of the Ghana Baseball Federation, takes charge of the
African Youth Games to be held in Algeria in July, 2018. He will be assisted by George Lamptey, president of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation.

Other Chef d’ Missions are Evans Yeboah, head of the Ghana Badminton Federation, who will be in charge of the Youth Olympic Games in October 2018. He will be assisted by Isaac Aboagye Duah, president of the Ghana Tennis Federation.

The GOC in a statement mentioned Emmanuel Tetteh, president of the Ghana Judo Federation assigned to the maiden African Beach Games in Cape Verde in 2019. He will be assisted by Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, president of Ghana Beach Soccer Federation.

The president of Ghana Rugby Football Union, Herbert Mensah, will take charge of Ghana’s contingent to the World Beach Games in 2019 and will be assisted by Steve Asante Bekoe of the Rowing and Canoeing Federation.

Ghana Golf Association president, Mike Aggrey, assisted by Mahadi Mohammed of the Ghana Fencing Federation, will lead the country to the Youth Winter Olympics in Laussane, while Ghana Volleyball Association chief Paul Atchoe will take charge of Ghana’s contingent to the 2010 Summer Olympics. He leads a trio comprising Joseph Mingle of the Kickboxing Federation and George Owusu of Sports for All, who would be in charge of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.

Earlier this year, the GOC boss appointed Ghana Table tennis chief, Mawuko Afadzinu, as Chef d’Mission to the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas. He was assisted by Theophilus Edzie of the Ghana Swimming Federation.
