Go for the kill against Ramirez -- Coach Asare tells Commey

Kwasi Ofori Asare, trainer of Black Bombers, has called on Richard Commey to go for the kill as he prepares to take on Jose Ramirez in a WBC super lightweight championship eliminator in Fresno, California, on March 25.

The Wisdom Boxing Club trainer believes a win for the Ghanaian would enhance his bid to win a world title in a different weight class.

Commey (30-4-1, 27 KOs), a former IBF lightweight champion, moved up in weight to 140 pounds following his defeat to Vasyl Lomachenko in December 2021 and drew in his debut super lightweight fight with Jose Pedraza last year.

The hard-hitting Ghanaian’s performance impressed Top Rank Promotions who offered him another opportunity to secure a title shot against Ramirez (27-1, 17 KOs).

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Coach Asare called on Commey to take the fight to his opponent if he is to stand a chance of defeating the dangerous American.

“It is not going to be an easy fight for Commey and I think he has to go for the kill to finish off Ramirez in their fight.

“Commey is a hardworking fighter and I am confident he has the best corner to help him go past his opponent. I am very confident he would make Ghanaians proud,” said Coach Asare.

Commey lost his IBF lightweight crown eight months after destroying Russia’s Isa Chaniev to win it in February 2019. He, however, returned to winning ways against Dominican Republic’s Jackson Marinez in February 2021 with a knockout victory.

A subsequent defeat to legendary Vasyl Lomachenko forced the 35-year-old to move up to super lightweight after conceding that he felt more comfortable at 140 pounds.
