For now, league leaders Kumasi Asante Kotoko can be described as shadow league champions as everything points to their coronation as back-to-back Glo Premier League titlist on Sunday.
Unless the unimaginable happens, Kotoko look too good to overrun Amidaus Professionals and claim their second straight league silverware. And like rivals Hearts of Oak, the Porcupine Warriors have the character to rise to the occasion when it matters most.
Having come so close to another glory they yearn for badly to appease their fans, it will be the eighth wonder of the world if Kotoko allow their unsung opponents to spoil their party at Tema on Sunday.
Running neck and neck for the title with former champions Berekum Chelsea on 53 points appiece, the only scenario which can delay Kotoko’s 22nd league crowning is if the former beat relegation-threatened Heart of Lions at Kpando. Such a development will push Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea into a play-off per Article 8 (5) of the GFA Regulations.
In case both teams win on Sunday, they will finish on 56 points and that is when the head-to-head rule will apply. Interestingly, the two teams are tied on head-to-head as they beat each other 2-0 at home.
But considering their respective games on Sunday, Berekum Chelsea seem to face a tougher task as they play a Lions side which need at least a draw to stay in the premiership.
With the fate of RTU and Berekum Arsenals already decided, Lions and Tema Youth are locked up in a fierce battle for survival, with the Tema lads also facing a tall order in Accra against a Hearts of Oak side desperately seeking a win to finish among the top four.
Talking of the top four brings to the fore Arsenal’s home game with Ebusua Dwarfs who also have a bright chance of landing in the elite group with a vital away win.
Matches which will merely be for the records include Faisal-Liberty Professionals in Kumasi, Ashantigold versus RTU at Obuasi, Aduana Stars versus Wa All Stars and Medeama SC versus New Edubiase United at Tarkwa.
