‘I won’t abandon boxing for politics’

The Vice-president of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) Abraham Kotei Neequaye says he is not going to abandon the sport in pursuit of his political ambition after winning the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary to represent the Okaikoi South constituency in the parliamentary elections next year.

Mr Kotei-Neequaye, who is also a boxing promoter, was elected last Saturday as the NDC Parliamentary candidate, following which it was feared that the CEO of BabyJet Promotions and manager of former IBO lightweight champion, Emmanuel ‘Gameboy’ Tagoe, might abandon the sport in pursuit of politics.

However, parliamentary candidate said he chose politics to give him another platform to improve the lot of boxing.

“Even as a candidate, I am negotiating with corporate agencies to invest in boxing; imagine if I win.

I would use my position to hunt for talents, grow and develop the sport,” he told the Daily Graphic.

According to him, as an aspiring MP, he would have more leverage and clout to liaise with corporate bodies to invest in the sport and organise more boxing competitions in the country.

“This new position will help me grow the game, hunt for talents and nurture them, and seek for investment into the sport,” he stated.
