Afriyie wins Ashanti ping-pong tourney

Jeffrey Owusu Afriyie emerged winner of the maiden edition of the Ashanti Table Tennis Championship at the Kumasi Youth Centre on New Year’s Day.

The one-day event, which was dubbed “Table Tennis for Life and Health”, brought together over 50 young talents from different parts of the Ashanti Region.

One of the organisers, Timothy Abaidoo, told the Daily Graphic that the championship was to lift the image of the sport in the region.

“Table tennis has been very dull in Kumasi, and to a large extent the Ashanti Region, for more than a decade. We want to raise high the prospects of the sport in the region,” he said.

The youth must be encouraged to partake in table tennis and that is why the competition is being organised to unearth young talent and to groomed them to become a national asset”.

After receiving his medal and trophy, the winner of the event, Jefferey Owusu Afriyie, expressed his gratitude to the organisers of the event and appealed that more of such events should be organised to keep table tennis players in the region busy.

Seth Odame and Oppong Pepra came second and third, respectively.

The chairman of the Ashanti Region Table Tennis Association, Mr Kwaku Frimpong, chaired the event, with support from Mr Victor Yaw Owusu, the CEO of A-Life Supermarket.
