Ghana must improve upon Glasgow Commonwealth feat — GOC boss

The President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah, has stated that Team Ghana has no choice but to go a step further than what the nation achieved at the Glasgow Games in Scotland four years ago.

That, he said, was the only way the nation could assess itself and be sure that it was doing well and moving forward.

Mr Nunoo Mensah said this when he interacted with the Graphic Sports on the sidelines of a cocktail party organised by the Australian High Commission for Team Ghana ahead of their departure to the Gold Coast, Australia, for the 21st Commonwealth Games.

Ghana won two bronze medals at the Glasgow Games.

“This is the unfortunate situation everybody associated with the Games, be it the GOC, the Sports Ministry and the National Sports Authority (NSA), find ourselves in and so we have no choice than to do better than we did in Glasgow,” he said.

Commenting on Akwasi Frimpong’s participation in the winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, he said, “All the attention was on Ghana and that the Ministry of Tourism, for instance, would have to spend millions of dollars to get the kind of mileage Frimpong’s participation brought to Ghana inrternationally.”

He, therefore, called on all Ghanaians to be proud of Akwasi Frimpong.

Responding to a question on the improved planning and organisation for the Ghana team this time round, Mr Nunoo Mensah said: “It is because all three major stakeholders the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the NSA and the GOC are more focused this time and they have also agreed to work together.

He added that all the subcommittees set up for the games have so far played their roles well, culminating in the smooth preparation for the teams so far.

Mr Nunoo Mensah further called on corporate bodies to come on board to support Team Ghana to excel at the Games.
