Ghana’s team go into competition today in Cairo

Ghana in Egypt for Pan African Olympics

A team of 16 intellectually disabled athletes and seven officials of Special Olympics Ghana are in Cairo, Egypt, to participate in the maiden Pan African Special Olympics Games scheduled between January 27 and 31, 2020.

While eight of the intellectually disabled athletes will be fighting for honours in five-a-side football matches, eight others (four males and four females) will be up against their peers from other African countries for medals in 100 metres, 200m, 4x100m and long jump events.

Warm-up games

In preparation for the challenge ahead, the football team engaged in two friendly matches last Saturday after arriving in the Egyptian capital. The Ghanaians held Rwanda to a 0-0 draw and defeated Seychelles 1-0 in the second match.

The football team comprises Justice Zidah, Samuel Ackon (Twin City Special School, Takoradi), Desire Selorm Addo, Manyo Fidel (Gbi Kledjo Special School at Hohoe), Isaac Otchere, Constant Hevi, Adnan Adamu and Hamza Mohammed (Dzorwulu Special School in Accra).

The eight athletes were Hannah Dantakor, Alfred Bossumpim (Twin City Special School), Lawrencia Ababio, Benjamin Akosah (Garden City Special School, Kumasi), Joseph Tetteh Ametorwosi (Gbi Kledjo Special School), Princess Ayin, Elijah Ayin (Dzorwulu Special School), Victoria Obeng (Aboom Methodist, Cape Coast).
