Ghana football more important than becoming GFA president – George Afriyie

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie says his priority is to improve Ghana football rather than pursue the presidency of the association.

Afriyie, who lost to Kurt Okraku in the 2019 GFA presidential election, has been touted as a potential candidate for the top position in the next election.

However, he insists that becoming GFA president is not his primary ambition.

“I’m not desperate to become Ghana Football Association president. I’m desperate to get the best for Ghana football,” he told Sporty FM.

His comments come amid growing pressure on the GFA leadership following the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars have lost their opening two Group C matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving them without a point.

Afriyie has also questioned the implementation of some commitments made under Okraku’s administration, particularly plans to improve infrastructure for Colts football and establish partnerships between Ghana Premier League clubs and grassroots teams.

He believes broader structural reforms are needed to strengthen the administration and development of football in Ghana.

Afriyie’s comments come ahead of the next GFA presidential election, which is scheduled for October 2027.
