Ghana drop five places to 70th in latest FIFA rankings

The Black Stars have dropped five places to 70th in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking following a difficult start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana, who were previously ranked 65th, lost 25.73 points after suffering defeats in their opening two qualifying matches, losing 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before falling 4-2 to The Gambia.

The latest rankings, released on October 7, 2026, were based on 338 men’s international matches played since the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 19.

The matches included UEFA and Concacaf Nations League fixtures, as well as 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The poor results come during a difficult period for the four-time African champions, who also failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Following the two defeats, Ghana mutually parted ways with head coach Carlos Queiroz.

A scheduled friendly against Africa’s top-ranked team, Morocco, was also cancelled.

Ghana, currently ranked 14th in Africa, will now look to rebuild under new management as they prepare for their next international assignment.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in back-to-back 2027 AFCON qualifying matches.

Somalia are currently ranked 200th in the world.

In the global rankings, Ghana sit below Jamaica, who occupy 69th place. Cabo Verde are 68th, Honduras 67th, Albania 66th, and the United Arab Emirates 65th.

Elsewhere in Africa, Morocco remain the continent’s highest-ranked team at seventh in the world, followed by Senegal in 18th.

Côte d’Ivoire are ranked 29th, while Nigeria have dropped four places to 30th.

At the top of the global standings, 2026 FIFA World Cup champions Spain remain number one, followed by runners-up Argentina in second and France in third.
