Coach Otto Addo -- To take up dual roles with Ghana and Dortmund

GFA OK with Otto Addo's dual roles at Black Stars, Dortmund

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has stated that it is comfortable with Otto Addo handling two coaching roles with the Black Stars and Burussia Dortmund and does not believe the dual roles will get in the way of adequately preparing the Black Stars for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The FA's General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, said the coach's new contract with Dortmund provided him with enough room to juggle the two important jobs without it adversely affecting his duties with the Black Stars.

Last week, 46-year-old Addo revealed that his German employers had given him the green light to coach Ghana during the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year as well as handle Ghana's AFCON qualifiers which would commence with a home match against Madagascar on June 1.

“I have received permission from Dortmund,” Addo said in a podcast by German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt, adding that "under certain conditions, it is possible that I manage the international windows in June, September and also the World Cup.”

Compromise situation

For the FA's top administrator, the compromise deal represents a win-win situation which would enable the Black Stars and Dortmund to benefit from the coach's expertise.

He indicated that the GFA was close to signing contracts with Addo (who as interim coach guided Ghana to defeat Nigeria in the World Cup qualifying playoffs) and his assistants George Boateng of Aston Villa and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani of Right to Dream Academy/FC Nordsjælland in the next two weeks to enable them to lead the team in the AFCON qualifiers and a four-nation tournament in Japan.

"The GFA has been talking to the coaches of clubs and very soon we will finalise contracts with them. We are working to get all the technical teams together, as advised by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and we are at a stage where all of them are okay. We have to agree to contracts and get other stakeholders such as the government which is responsible for paying national team coaches to agree to the terms and then we sign the contracts," Mr Harrison-Addo told the Graphic Sports on Sunday.

He confirmed that the GFA president, Kurt Okraku, has been in touch with experienced Irish-Ghanaian coach, Chris Hughton, to remain part of the team as the Technical Advisor and he was confident that he would be part of the technical bench.

The FA expects all four coaches to continue to work together when the Black Stars players assemble to face Madagascar on June 1 in Cape Coast and June 5 in Antananarivo before moving to Japan for the four-nation tournament where Ghana will play host on June 10 in another match against either Tunisia or Chile.
