Exchequers split points with Police

Exchequers Saturday recorded a surprise 3-3 draw against Police in a feisty BEIGE Capital knock-out men's Group B hockey tie at the Theodosia Okoh Stadium in Accra.

The result ensured that Exchequers, representatives of Bank of Ghana in the Greater Accra Hockey League, will face defending champions Trustees in the final of the competition next Saturday after they topped the group with four points.

Prior to their encounter with Police, Exchequers thrashed Reformers 4-1 during the opening day of the competition.

Last year's losing finalists, Police, entered into the tie requiring victory after drawing 1-1 with Reformers earlier in the three-team group.

However, their unfancied opponents, Exchequers, equalised three times to break the existing duopoly between Police and Trustees.

The first-half ended in a 1-1 draw after Samuel Marfo had given Police the lead through a field goal, only for national star Elikem Akaba to give Exchequers a deserved equaliser two minutes later.

Police took the lead again in the 51st minute when penalty corner expert Benedict Sam fired past Exchequers goalie, Abdallah Amadu.

Exchequers however, replied through a penalty corner converted by Daniel Dankyi in the 54th minute.

Richard Adjei appeared to have handed Police entry to the final when he slammed a rebound into the goal, but Exchequers rallied once again with Elikem Akaba completing his brace from a controversial penalty corner in the 59th minute.

After the game, Police coach, Eric Adjei Obaya, who was furious with umpire Aziz Adimah's decision to award the penalty corner which led to the Exchequers equaliser, engaged in a heated exchange of words with the umpires, officials and players of his opponents.

Earlier, Trustees had sealed a spot in the men's final with a comfortable 3-0 thrashing of GRA, while Extinguishers booked a date with Police Ladies in the women's final with a 3-0 win over Amazing Grace.
