Ghana’s coach at the 2026 ITTF African Championships in Tangier, Morocco, Eva Ampah, has described her role as an honour and a responsibility, expressing pride in leading the country’s team at the continental competition.
Ampah, who led Ghana’s women’s team at the championship, said the experience carried special meaning for her as a female coach on a major international stage, where women in coaching remain underrepresented.
“I feel extremely honoured, humbled and proud to lead my country at this level, especially the women’s team. It is a huge responsibility,” Eva Ampah.
She added that she viewed her role as an opportunity to inspire young Ghanaian women who aspire to become coaches, while expressing satisfaction at seeing her players compete confidently against some of Africa’s best.
Reflecting on Team Ghana’s performance, Ampah said the players had shown significant improvement, gained valuable ranking points and acquired important international experience through their participation in the championship.
Coach Ampah praised Joanita Borteye’s run to the Round of 16 in the women’s singles event as evidence of the progress being made, while noting that the team had faced top-seeded players from Egypt, Nigeria, Tunisia and Madagascar.
“We played against top seeds from Egypt, Nigeria, Tunisia and Madagascar, and were up to the task. We fought.” Eva Ampah.
Ampah credited the players for their discipline and the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) for its support, while acknowledging GTTA President Mawuko Afadzinu for motivating the team before their departure for Morocco.
Looking ahead, the coach said the team would review its performances, correct mistakes and begin intensive training in preparation for future competitions.
She stressed the need for greater international exposure, friendly matches against other countries and increased support to help Ghanaian players improve their level of competition.
“We don’t just want to participate but to compete,” Ampah stated.
A police officer herself, Ampah also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Director of Ghana Police Sports, the team manager and technical director of the Ghana Police Table Tennis Team, as well as the coaches, for their support.
Ampah’s comments reflect Ghana’s determination to build on the experience gained in Morocco and continue developing players capable of competing strongly on the international stage.
