Ernest Sowah eyes Stars

Newly signed Kumasi Asante Kotoko goalie, Ernest Sowah, insists  the stiff competition he faces at the stables of the Porcupine Warriors will motivate him to be a better shot-stopper and ensure his quick return to the senior national team, the Black Stars.

Sowah, who completed a three-year deal in October to join the Porcupine Warriors after cancelling his contract with Congolese side CS Don Bosco, conceded in an interview with the Graphic Sports that he faces a scramble for the first-choice  with competition from Eric Ofori Antwi, Felix Annan and Isaac Amoako (injured) at his new club.

However, the 27-year-old former Berekum Chelsea goalie, after coming on as a  substitute for Felix Annan last Saturday in the Porcupine Warriors' 4-2 victory against former Black Stars players at the Accra Sports Stadium, disclosed that he was relishing the contest for place at his new club.

He said, "I am not scared of the competition because it is better to be in a club with good goalkeepers as it motivates you and lifts your performances.”

"When you are at a club and there is no competition, even if you sleep you will always be in goal. But when you join the national team your weaknesses will always be exposed because you won't meet the required standards. So this competition is helping me a lot.”

"We are at training and it is very exciting because all the goalkeepers know that whoever excels will be given the opportunity by the coach to start. I am working hard to lift my performance levels and get back to the national team, that is what is important," Sowah, who made his only Black Stars appearance on his debut on August 15, 2012, against China, added.

Sowah also tipped the Porcupine Warriors to win all trophies on account of the quality of their squad.

"We have a very strong squad, we can derive three strong teams from our squad, so we can achieve something special when the season gets underway."
