Emulate example of AFCON 1965 squad — Akufo-Addo

The 2016 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has urged the next generation of Ghanaian footballers to take inspiration from members of Ghana's 1965 AFCON squad who defended the honour of the nation with distinction.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, the triumph of the 1965 AFCON squad 50 years ago in Tunisia won the nation a lot of respect globally, with the Black Stars becoming a footballing powerhouse on the back of those performances.

Nana Akufo-Addo made the call yesterday when the members of the 1965 AFCON squad presented him with an official invitation to their Golden Jubilee celebration which takes place on December 3 at the Sun Lodge Hotel in Accra.

The 1965 AFCON team members, which visited the presidential candidate at his residence in Accra, comprised Rev Osei Kofi, Rev Kofi Pare, John Bortey Naawu, Dodoo Ankrah, as well as officials of the Despite Group of Companies.

He said: "I am very excited to receive these legends who made all of us proud by winning the AFCON in 1965.” "I was young, a young footballer then and they inspired me; that is why I am glad that they are being honoured this year.”

"They laid the foundations of the Black Stars who are now renowned in world football and now Ghanaians are identified throughout the world with the Black Stars."

He also pledged to participate in the Golden Jubilee celebrations by attending both the fundraising dinner on December 3 and a football match slated for December 4 at the Accra Stadium between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Ghana's 1992 AFCON silver medal-winning team.

A member of the 1965 squad, Rev. Osei Kofi, expressed gratitude to Nana Akufo-Addo for accepting their invitation which he said would motivate more Ghanaians to join in the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
