Cycling: Granfondo Ghana Race on August 22

Ghana will host its first international cycling race of the year on Sunday, August 22, 2021, when the Granfondo Ghana Cycling Race is held across the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

The organisers, the TBT Cycling Club, Accra, a non-profit cycling club expect the 100-kilometre race to attract over 200 professional and recreational cyclists from across West Africa to compete for cash prizes and trophies.

Route

According to the Race Director, Mr Kwabena Larbi, the race will start at the serene Legon Botanical Garden, through Adenta, Somanya, Apirede Hill, Mamfe, and descend to the Aburi Hill.

"This race is synonymous and at par with some of the scenic sporting events in Africa, the intention is to also showcase the beautiful cycling routes in Ghana to attract international cyclists and boost tourism in Ghana," Mr Larbi told the Daily Graphic in an interview.

"This race is being organised by TBT Cycling Club with a vision to promote grass-root cycling in Ghana as a means of recreational activities for cycling enthusiasts and to promote overall health and wellness for all age groups".

Prizes

He said the winner, first runner-up and second runner-up will receive GH₵5,000, GH₵1,500 and GH₵1,000 respectively while the best female cyclist will get GH₵2,000 for her efforts.

Registration

Mr Larbi further disclosed that registration was currently ongoing online at www.tbtcyclingclub.com with participants expected to pay GH₵80 as a registration fee.

The race is sponsored by Sykes and Partners Limited with support from Safety Insurance Brokers, DHL Ghana and the Legon Botanical Garden.
