Coach fears for Martha Bissah’s career

Isaac Nii Odartey Lamptey, coach of Martha Bissah, Ghana’s first Youth Olympic gold

The Kumasi-based Police officer claimed  Martha, who was under his care at his family house at Pokuase, from where he monitored and gave her a training schedule to keep her in shape, has moved out of her Pokuase base and relocated to Kasoa where Mr Berko resides.

The new turn of events, according to coach Lamptey, began when they returned from the Youth Olympics last year and were hosted by Mr Berko on his show at Tesano-based Adinkra FM after which the famous actor and radio presenter expressed his interest to manage the athlete

Subsequently, Martha and the actor-cum-broadcaster exchanged numbers and started communicating.

“Mr Osei Berko then suggested to me that he wanted accommodation for Martha but considering her training schedule, among other factors, I felt that could affect her schedule. As a result, I sent her to live with my relations at Pokuase.”

“For about two months now, Martha has moved from my place at Pokuase and she is now staying with Mr Osei Berko at Kasoa and she hardly communicates with me. I think this [situation] could affect her career progression,” lamented Coach Lamptey, who admitted he did not have a problem with the teenage athlete having a manager at this stage of her career but preferred a manager who had a sporting background and was well versed in athletics.

He also expressed concern about the status of Martha’s supposed scholarship which was mentioned by President Mahama in his State of the Nation address and appealed to stakeholders to come clear on the athletes scholarship programme.
