CHAN team's performance reflects standard of league—Fianoo

The Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo, believes the poor performance of the Black Galaxies at the Championship of Africa Nations (CHAN) tournament in Algeria reflects the low standards of the league.

He observed that the league was bereft of stars which culminated in the substandard performance of the team at the continental competition.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports in an interview, the GHALCA boss said the team’s disappointing performance was closely linked to the standard of the league since it was the best of local players that were selected for the tournament.

“If really we sent the best of our league there then I think they were disappointing, the performance wasn’t good unless you are saying that the performance wasn’t a true reflection of the local players”, he stated.

Ghana’s Black Galaxies were bundled out of the tournament at the quarter final by Niger after struggling to qualify from the group stage that consisted of teams such as Madagascar, Sudan and Morocco.

Fianoo stated that ‘the team we sent didn’t help us’ but refrained from making any assessment over whether Ghana took the best of local talents to the competition insisting that it was rather the responsibility of the technical team to determine that.

He also averred that the enthusiasm that heralded the qualification could not give the opportunity to improve the team and believed ending the eight-year absence at the tournament meant the team had improved.

“I think that the mere fact that we qualified after eight years also took the wind of our hunger to find the best of players so by making it, it was considered as improvement for a success story but qualifying alone wasn’t enough”, he stated.
