C'wealth Games: Black Bombers trainer targets medal haul

The trainer of the Black Bombers, Kwasi Ofori Asare, says he has a good team to win medals for Team Ghana at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next month.

The coach of the national amateur boxing team believes he has a full house to ensure the Bombers improve on their single medal in the 2018 edition of the games in Australia.

Coach Asare is yet to name his final nine-member boxing team for the games but Graphic Sports sources have revealed United States (US)-based Ornella Sathoud, Olympian Shakul Samed (light heavyweight), Abdul Wahid Omar (light-welterweight) and Jessie Lartey (light-middleweight) as being part of the list.

The rest are Abubakar Quartey (middleweight), Alfred Kotey (welterweight), Joseph Commey (featherweight), Abraham Mensah (bantamweight) and Yaw Addo (flyweight).

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Asare said he was confident of not returning home from the games empty-handed.

“I have a solid team for the games and I am hopeful that we will do better this time around than the last time in 2018.

“This is a mix of experience and talented boxers who are ready to make a mark for the country and I am very confident in the team to deliver,” Coach Asare told Graphic Sports.

The Black Bombers have become a reliable team for Ghana at international competitions, having consistently won laurels for the nation.

Last year, the team made history when Samuel Takyi won bronze at the Olympic Games in Tokyo to end Ghana’s 29-year wait for a medal at the biggest multi-sport tournament in the world.
