Bodybuilding: Yartey to serve on AFBB

The president of the Ghana Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (GBFA), Mr Abdul-Hayye Yartey, has been appointed onto the new executive committee of the African Federation of Bodybuilding (AFBB) at the just-ended International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) congress in Spain.

Mr Yartey, who became the president of the GBFA in 2003, set out to make bodybuilding a competitive sport in the country.

In 2006, he introduced the annual Man Ghana Bodybuilding Championship and championed the participation of Ghanaian bodybuilders on the international stage.

Consequently, he launched an initiative of competitive bodybuilding competitions across the country and was able to gain recognition by the National Sports Authority (NSA), AFBB and IBB in 2007.

He hosted the first edition of the IBB West African Bodybuilding Championship in Ghana in July, this year.

He told the Daily Graphic that he intended to use his new position to enhance the lot of bodybuilders in the country.

He called for more support from corporate bodies to help maintain the sport.
