Ghana's Black Maidens bowed out of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Morocco 2026 after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Japan in their quarter-final clash at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 1.
A 54th-minute strike by Nanami Kurita proved decisive as the Asian side ended Ghana's impressive run in the competition and secured a place in the semi-finals.
Coach Joe Nana Adarkwa was forced to make two key changes to his starting line-up for the crucial encounter, with captain Seidatu Wahab missing through injury and Hajara Adam suspended following her red card against Argentina in the Round of 16.
Osman Rafia took over the captaincy, while Mavis Koah and Kpentey Belinda were handed starting roles.
The Black Maidens produced a disciplined defensive display in a tightly contested first half, frustrating the Japanese attackers with the compact defensive shape promised by Coach Adarkwa ahead of the encounter.
However, Ghana's resistance was broken nine minutes into the second half when a ricochet from Yuka Kishida's attempt fell kindly to Kurita, who made no mistake from close range.
The goal forced the Black Maidens to push forward in search of an equaliser, but they struggled to break down a well-organised Japanese defence.
Ghana showed glimpses of the fighting spirit that carried them past Argentina in the Round of 16, where they secured victory on penalties despite playing much of the contest with 10 players.
However, Japan's ability to retain possession and dictate the pace of the game made it difficult for the West Africans to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Despite the quarter-final exit, the Black Maidens can take pride in their campaign, having demonstrated resilience and determination to reach the last eight of the tournament.
