Black Bombers outpunch Detroit Golden Gloves as African championship tests loom

Ghana's Black Bombers delivered a winning start to their revamped international campaign, defeating the Metro Detroit Golden Gloves 6-4 in a fiercely contested 10-bout showdown at the Bukom Boxing Arena last Saturday, as the national team gears up for two major African championships later this month.

The Ghanaians stormed to victory in the opening five bouts to seize control of the international friendly before their American opponents mounted a spirited comeback, winning four of the remaining five contests to give the home side a stern examination ahead of a demanding international schedule.

American heavyweight Darius Parlor stole the individual honours, earning the Best Boxer of the Night award after outclassing Ghana's Jibril Muntari by unanimous decision in the final bout.

The international contest formed part of the Ghana Boxing Federation's efforts to provide high-level competitive exposure for its boxers, strengthen sporting and cultural ties with the United States and assess the progress of the national team's new technical setup.

It also marked another step in Ghana's preparations for the 2027 African Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Early control

Reigning 2025 African Youth champion Mathias Ashitey set the tone for Ghana's impressive start, sweeping aside Cayden Yousser 3-0 in the 55kg division.

Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games medallist Amadu Mohammed maintained the momentum with victory over Tyler Luce at 60kg, before fellow Commonwealth Games representative Ebenezer Ankrah outpointed Christian Curry 3-0 at 63kg.

Francis Quartey then edged Payden Jones 2-1 in a closely fought 63.5kg contest, while experienced campaigner Abdul Wahid Omar, a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian, demonstrated his pedigree with a convincing 3-0 victory over Gianni Figueroa at 65kg.

Those five successive wins put Ghana firmly in command, but the Americans refused to surrender. Christian Geck, Desmond Harris and Lamar Stewart III all registered victories for Detroit before Parlor rounded off the visitors' impressive recovery with his unanimous-decision triumph over Muntari in the heavyweight division.

Solomon Sackey ensured Ghana retained the upper hand, defeating Mustapha Alfartousi in the 75kg contest to complete the Bombers' six victories.

The evening also offered a glimpse of Ghana's emerging boxing talent, with eight juvenile exhibition bouts involving members of the national youth team, the Black Rockets, providing competitive exposure for promising male and female boxers.

Metro Detroit Golden Gloves President Katealia Chambers expressed appreciation for the reception accorded her delegation and indicated that the Americans were eager to return.

"We thank everyone for coming out to support the Detroit Golden Gloves on this international trip," Chambers said. "We look forward to returning next year and for many more years to come."

The victory provides a timely confidence boost for the Bombers, but a significantly tougher examination awaits the national team under coaches Vincent Akai Nettey and Charles Quartey.

Ghana face the unusual challenge of competing in two overlapping continental championships, requiring the federation to assemble separate squads and carefully manage its available talent.

The World Boxing (WB) African Championships are scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya, from October 15 to 28, while the IBA Africa Elite Men's and Women's Championships will take place in Kinshasa, DR Congo, from October 19 to November 1.

With the two competitions running simultaneously for 10 days, the federation faces a considerable logistical and technical challenge in distributing its strongest boxers across both tournaments without compromising competitiveness.

More tests ahead

The Bombers' international programme will continue beyond the two African championships, with participation planned for the IBA President's Cup in Istanbul, Turkey.

A further international contest against a French team is scheduled for December, followed by another engagement with an English team in March 2027.
