Africa Games: Borteyman comes alive

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has assured the completion of all infrastructure for the hosting of the 13th Africa Games and handed over three months ahead of time.

The construction of the $145 m sports complex infrastructure in Borteyman is ongoing and according to the minister, it will be completed by December 2023 and handed over for the games scheduled for March 8-23, next year.

This came to light when the Technical Committee of the Games and the members of the Local Organising Committee undertook a facility inspection tour to evaluate the ongoing work on the facilities.

The facilities located at the University of Ghana and Borteyman include a 1,000-seater competition swimming pool with 10 lanes, an eight-lane warm-up swimming pool, and a 1,000-seater multipurpose sports hall for games such as basketball, table tennis, boxing and badminton.

Also included is a 500-seater temporary dome for handball, volleyball and judo, five tennis courts, six-lane athletics track with benches, one FIFA standard football training field, a space for children’s playground and an administrative building.

The minister also commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the resolution of the longstanding impasse between the Africa Union, the Association of National Olympic Committee (ANOCA) and the Association of Africa Sports Confederation (AASC).

He attributed the signing of the negotiated agreement on the management and organisation of the Games on February 19, in Ethiopia as a significant milestone that opened the way for the commencement of the planning of the Games.
