When amateur golfer, Afia Konadu Agyepong, decided to compete in the recent Turkish Airlines Invitational Golf Championship, it seemed to her as business as usual until mother luck launched her into the history books in such a graceful manner.

All Afia needed on that fateful day was just a big swing to strike a memorable Hole-in -One fit for the gods to set the Achimota Golf Course alight with spontaneous chants in response to that rare feat.

Like a dream, it took the handicap 29 golfer a while to come to terms with the reality that she had indeed enlisted among the golf greats that this nation can boast of.

As unique as the mark, so was her prize - an all-expenses-paid trip to an European country of her choice.

Come to think of it, the achievement came just a day before her birthday, making it such a special present Afia would cherish for a long time to come.

 Calmly putting the ball.

'It's not easy winning a hole in one. I really wasn't expecting it.

'It was a day to my birthday and it's the best birthday present ever,' an elated Afia said emotionally with an infectious smile during an interview with The Mirror.

She is determined to draw inspiration from that class act to edge her closer to her dream to rank among the best lady golfers in the country in the near future.

Contrary to the norm, Afia revealed that she is a self-motivated golfer without any particular mentor to look up to.

'I don't really have a mentor. I always aim high and try to motivate myself to reach that target', she stressed.

The lady with dual membership from the Achimota and Celebrity golf clubs in Accra embraces golf as a hobby which is full of fun and also extols the benefits of the sport with passion.

'Golf is a rare hobby that combines exercise, the great outdoors, dedicated time with others, skills and friendly competition.

 Striking pose.

'Golf is fun; a day out on the course calms your mind, keeps you fit and engaged', she explained.

According to her, golf also allows one to look inward and work towards improvement, while reminding patrons of their imperfection.

Afia, a young adult, disclosed she was introduced to golf by a school mate and friend in the middle of 2014.

Among the major tournaments she has participated in during her three-year stint include the MTN Asantehene Gold Cup 2016, Ghana Open 2016, First Atlantic Bank Tournament 2016, Corporate Golf 2017 which saw her winning the longest drive prize, South Africa Freedom Day Tournament 201 among others.

Quite typical of golfers, Afia is a successful entrepreneur who deals in the mineral water business.

'I'm into water production. I'm the MD of Daily Natural Mineral Water and have been doing the water business for the past seven years after my National Service,' she added.
