A field of 140 carefully selected amateur golfers, including international participants from Nigeria, Burundi and Kenya, is set to compete in the fifth edition of the Head of State Invitational Golf Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, November 21, 2026, at the Achimota Golf Club in Accra.
The tournament, which was officially launched at the Achimota Golf Clubhouse, is held in honour of President John Dramani Mahama under the theme "Driving National Growth Through Leadership, Partnership and Golf." The launch brought together distinguished sponsors, partners, club leadership and members of the media.
In his remarks, the Coordinator for the tournament, Francis Andoh, emphasised that the event transcends the sport itself. "Our commitment extends beyond the course.
Through the Head of State Foundation, we seek to support community outreach and create opportunities for young people through golf. We invite our partners and participants to help turn this commitment into meaningful support for those who need it," he said.
The tournament is headlined by First National Bank, with BOST Energies as the Gold sponsor.
Other valued sponsors include Samsung Ghana, The Luckiest, Myla Homes, National Petroleum Authority, Danny List Foundation, Aphro Ghana, Coca-Cola Ghana, Guinness Ghana, Pasonia, La Villa Aphro, Happy Box, TGTS, Ember Coco, Sunlodge, JD's Fresh Juice, The Palms by Eagles, Gevans Natural Minerals Water and Nguvu Mining Limited.
Speaking at the launch, Mike Aggrey, a member of the Board of Trustees of Achimota Golf Club and General Secretary of the African Golf Confederation, provided insights into the tournament's history and impact.
He noted that the event was established in 2017 as a non-partisan, not-for-profit initiative designed to bring together leaders of government, business and captains of industry away from the bureaucracy of ministries and offices.
"The idea being that it will meet away from the bureaucracy of the ministries and the Jubilee House to a place such as a golf course where you can have a rapport without all the difficulties associated with the office environment," he said.
He added that the event has served as an avenue for decision-makers to discuss Ghana's economic, social and political development.
Aggrey highlighted that the tournament is strictly for amateurs and by invitation, targeting CEOs, board chairpersons and leaders in the corporate world. "You are a golfer plus you are a leader in the troop," he noted, adding that the winner will take home the giant trophy.
Reflecting on the impact of past editions, Aggrey recalled the 2018 event in Kumasi, which was attended by about 16 ministers of state and numerous industry leaders.
"During that event, a lot of deals were struck because people were able to meet directly with ministers of state and put projects together and make proposals directly without going through secretariats," he stated, noting that the tournament has contributed significantly to the country's economic development.
