A high-placed source at Hearts confirmed to the Graphic Sports yesterday that the Ghana Premier League champions had concluded paper works with Muntari and he was expected to be officially introduced by the club to the media today.

The midfielder, who scored 20 goals in 84 appearances for the Black Stars between 2002 and 2014, will be with the club for the rest of the season, following which both parties could negotiate a renewal of contract.

“It is true Hearts of Oak has signed Sulley Muntari and he is going to play for us. He has signed for one year but his contract will be renewed if he proves himself,” the source said.

“Everything has been settled and we have agreed on the terms and the team will unveil him today,” the source added.

Muntari has been training with the Phobians in recent days to keep fit and his signing will be welcome news to the club's faithful as the strong player has a wealth of experience to help revive Hearts' title defence.

The former Liberty Professional player became a free agent in 2019 after he severed ties with Spanish club Albacete after a short stint.

He is expected to bring a wealth of experience to bear on Coach Samuel Boadu's side, having played in the top league of Europe with clubs such as Udinese, AC Milan,Inter Milan, Portsmouth, Ittihad, Pescara and Deportivo La Coruna.

Muntari will join a growing list of big name Ghanaian players, including Laryea Kingston (Hearts of Oak), Baffour Gyan (Kotoko), Asamoah Gyan and Fatau Dauda (both Legon Cities), who returned to the local league at the twilight of their careers.
