Jonathan Mensah extends contract with Columbus Crew

Mensah who is also the skipper of the club joined the MLS side in 2016 from Russian club, Anzhi Makhachkala and made 95 appearances for the club.

The 30-year-old who has played every single minute of their game this season penned a multiple year contract extension for the club.

President and General Manager of the club, Tim Bezbatchenko, who confirmed the news in a statement described him as one of the top defenders of the MLS who has given meaning to the term leadership by example.

“We are thrilled to announce that Jonathan has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Club,” Crew president and GM Tim Bezbatchenko said in a club statement. 

“In addition to having a ‘Defender of the Year’ award-worthy season in 2020 and consistently being one of the top defenders in MLS, Jonathan is someone who leads by example and serves as a role model to the younger players.

“He has earned the respect of teammates, coaches and the Central Ohio community alike for his efforts on and off the field and we are delighted that he has committed to remain in Columbus.”, the club president said.

Mensah has made 58 appearances for the Black Stars and was a member of the team that played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup. He has also played for Spanish club Granada and French side Thonon Evian FC.
