“I don’t sleep, I can’t sleep, I can’t eat; there is so much money in boxing but we are not making a dime here. We can make much money here if only we can put things right,” he told the Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview at his residence at East Legon in Accra last Thursday.

He praised the leadership of the current president, Peter Zwennes, for trying to sustain the capital intensive discipline with no government or corporate sponsorship but added that there was still more to be done.

“Peter Zwennes has done a yeoman’s job; he has done well but there is more to be done as we need money to run this sport,” he stated.

Mr Spain promised to use his international connections to convince investors to invest in the sport and liaise with promoters to seek sponsorship from corporate entities in the country if elected.

“I have the clout, I have what it takes to make boxing a profitable venture in Ghana, I only need the votes,” he told the Graphic Sports.

He also promised to ensure adequate purses for boxers, let trainers get their due and also make the media a permanent feature of his administration.

“The media is a key element in making boxing in Ghana an attraction to the business community and I will ensure I work with the media always, if elected,” he assured.

Mr Spain is contesting the position of president in the upcoming GBA elections scheduled for July 22 in Accra.
