GBA boss calls for dialogue to resolve conflict

He therefore called on boxing promoters and trainers who are against the league to come for a dialogue on how to leverage the league to organise a major bout in the country and do away with their destructive tendencies.

"This kind of league started under former presidents, Moses Foh-Amoaning and Peter Zwennes, and the only difference here is that I am making everyone benefit as against a selected few and that is my crime," he lamented in an exclusive telephone interview with the Graphic Sports in Accra last Thursday.

He explained that under the previous regimes, where such leagues were held, a lump sum was given to promoters but that was not the case now as the GBA provides for boxers, trainers, referees and judges and other auxiliary workers.

"The reason why these boxing promoters are on my neck is that when they do promotions aside the main bout, any boxer who wants to fight on the bill is made to pay to the promoter before securing a fight. But that is not so with the De-Luxy Professional Boxing League," he stated.

A meeting last Tuesday involving the GBA president and some boxing trainers and promoters in Accra ended at the James Town Police Station after a misunderstanding ensued among the stakeholders, with allegations that Mr Neequaye pulled a gun at some people.

While denying ever using a gun in his life, Mr Neequaye, however, confirmed that the matter was with the Police and that his lawyers were currently dealing with the issue.

He described attempts to taint his unblemished managerial record in the sport as fruitless and called on his saboteurs to come for a meeting.

"Some of those present at the meeting had nothing to do with boxing; they were neither managers, trainers, boxers, promoters, nor ring officials. They came there to foment trouble," he alleged.

He urged the Boxing Promoters Association to take advantage of the De-Luxy Professional Boxing League and organise major bouts on the bill to save money.

He pledged his commitment to see to the development of the sport to regain its glorious past.
